We spend more time indoors as this holiday season commences.. and some pests may have simi- lar plans. Pests are naturally drawn to the heat of our homes, as the outside gets colder, and will want to come inside & partake in all of those delicious holiday foods! As winter approaches there is an absence of flying insects, such as mosquitoes, flies, and bees. However we do notice an increase on the inside* of our homes of these invaders, as the cold drives them in – especially if there are easy access points for them. Usually this is during the onset of the seasonal change, but as weather has been lately unpredictable – this window has been fluctuating.
We usually associate these pests with summer and fall, a nuisance to outdoor activities, and are thankful that the colder weather brings relief from their stings and bites. But a lack of flying pests does not mean a lack of all pests during the winter. Rodents, Roaches, Ants and spiders are also seeking shelter from the cold; and our warm homes seem cozy to them too. It is important to take preventative measures to keep these pests out for the health and hygiene of our families and pets. During this time of the year the most common home pests are rodents. Mice rats & squirrels tend to be one of the more common culprits during winter. These pests also carry diseases such as Salmonella & Hantavirus. Interestingly it is in their nature to constantly ‘teethe” in order to file their ever growing teeth. They have been known to chew wires and even can cause electrical fires!
At Evergreen Pest Control we actually find these animals to be very cute, but we also believe that we assist in training them to stay out of the home by using our integrative pest control practices; such as sealing the tiny entrances that they can enter into, preserving their ultimate safety & the health but more importantly protecting the health & hygiene of our friends, families & pets.
HELPFUL & HEALTHFUL TIPS FROM EVERGREEN PEST CONTROL
*Seal the cracks & holes on the outside of your home to help prevent rodents from getting inside. Be sure to check the areas where utilities and pipes enter the home. (A mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime.)
*Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation & windows. Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home. Ants & mice can make nests in wood piles & easily gain access if the pile is nearby. Rodents can also hide in clutter, so keep storage areas well organized, and boxes off the floor.
*Eliminate moisture sites like leaking pipes & clogged drains. Extra attention should be paid to kitchens & bathrooms as these areas are particularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations. *Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens in windows & screen vents to chimneys. Keep attics, basements & crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
Winter can bring worry about home damage with wind, snow and frost. Following these tips will help reduce the likelihood of your home experiencing other seasonal problems due to pests.
